NEW YORK —Sixty years after she captured America's heart, six-year-old Eloise is still making trouble at the Plaza Hotel in New York City.

Eloise is the central character in a series of beloved children’s books, written in the 1950s by Kay Thompson, who died in 1998, and illustrated by Hilary Knight, who’s very much alive at 90.

Hilary Knight, who has illustrated more than fifty books for children including Kay Thompson’s Eloise appeared at the Eric Carle Museum for a special storytime program followed by a book signing. The event was to celebrate the 60th birthday of Eloise, declared by The New York Times as “one of the most recognizable characters in children’s literature!”

Eloise is a the darling of The Plaza hotel, and this year is a “rawther” large celebration as she will be celebrating 60 years skittering down the hall and getting into hilarious hijinks in the most famous hotel in New York with her dog who looks like a cat, Weenie, and Skipperdee, her turtle. “The Plaza is the only hotel in New York that will allow you to have a turtle.”
